Barring any last minute scheduling changes, which I am told are always possible, I should have a cartoon piece published in this weekend’s New York Times Sunday Book Review, a graphic response to Vintage Contemporaries, an excellent new novel by Dan Kois, due out next Tuesday from HarperCollins. I loved this book.
Cartooning Workshops and Author Visits
I’m coming off an exceptionally good week in terms of getting out there and connecting with young readers. On Monday I made my way up to Verona, New Jersey, to present my Cartooning Lessons workshop to a great group of kids.
One of the kids draw a little drawing of Lori from The Fifth Quarter, which is always such a cool thing for me.
Then on Thursday I spoke to the Grade 3-5 students at Middletown Village Elementary which was an absolute blast!
I don’t get the chance to show my work to this many kids every single week, so I’m extremely grateful for the times that it happens. I’m currently lining up more school visits over the Spring, if you would be interested in having me conduct a workshop or speak to the middle-grade readers at your school, please reach out.
My next scheduled event is a workshop at the Pennington Public Library on January 25th. If you’re in that area, please come out.
A Year of Making Comics
Perhaps I shouldn’t bury this all the way down at the bottom of my newsletter, as it is something I hope people check out, but for those of you who’d like to know more about my creative process, the comics projects I’ve got in the works, and all the different ways I scramble to try to make a living in this unstable industry, I’m serializing “A Year of Making Comics” on my Patreon for premium supporters. My plan is to publish updates a few times a week all the way through the whole of 2023.
I’ve posted four updates so far, chronicling the writing and creation of a new cartoon essay that I’m not yet sure what to do with. I posted the full initial draft today, so if you sign up you can check that out.
In addition to these exclusive posts, premium supporters also receive brand new ‘zines from me as I publish them. I’m putting together the next one now, and am hoping to start mailing them to backers in February.
