Cartooning Lessons Reel

+ Freddie & Me pages on display in France

Apologies that there’s not a lot of meat in the above video, I’ve been making an effort recently to improve my “reel” game (mostly for my Instagram, but also I see here that I’m able to upload videos to this Substack), and I did my best to record a little something from the sold out Cartooning Lessons workshop I presented at The Barron Arts Center this past weekend. There were twenty-one kids there, and we had a blast talking about and making our own comics. Unfortunately, having so many kids there, I didn’t have the time or bandwidth to concentrate on making a somewhat better video clip to share afterwards. Ah well, live and learn.

I will be conducting another workshop tomorrow afternoon, 4-5PM at the Snapology in Tinton Falls. There are some spaces available, if you have or know of an aspiring cartoonist who might enjoy making some comics (and getting a complimentary copy of my graphic novel, The Fifth Quarter), there’s still time to sign them up. I guarantee it’ll be a great experience for them.

Other Updates

An extremely cool thing that happened recently was that some pages of mine were put on display in France at one of the galleries in the town of Angouleme. For those who don’t know, Angouleme hosts a massive comics festival every Winter, the whole town is swarming with publishers and cartoonists, and there’s comics stuff everywhere. A few of my books have been translated into French, so I’ve been fortunate enough to attend the festival a handful of times in the past. It’s always an inspiring and invigorating experience.

My pages are taken from my graphic novel, Freddie & Me, my epic 300+ page memoir about growing up as the World’s Biggest Queen Fan (at least I liked to think I was). The exhibition was called Rock! Pop! Wizz! and was filled with comics that were all about music and musicians. It was a thrill to have my work included, even if it’s a shame that this year I wasn’t able to travel over there to see the display in person.
